Health & Safety Services in Portsmouth

Use Orbit for a single piece of work or for ongoing support. The services below can be provided individually or combined around the needs of your organisation.

What is a competent source of advice?

A competent person provides the knowledge, skills and experience needed to help your organisation meet its health and safety responsibilities.

Why do I need this service?

Regulation 7 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires employers to appoint one or more competent persons to assist them with health and safety measures.

What do I get with this service?

You will have access to a qualified and experienced health and safety consultant by phone and email, with advice tailored to your organisation and the issues you actually need to manage.

Our Way of Working

We work closely with clients and aim to provide continuity of support. You will have direct access to an experienced consultant who gets to know your organisation, rather than being passed between different people each time.

How much does it cost?

Prices start from £25 a month depending on the size and nature of your business.

What is a Health and Safety Policy?

A health and safety policy sets out how your organisation will manage health and safety, including responsibilities and the arrangements in place to control risk.

Do I need to have a Health and Safety Policy?

Every employer must have a health and safety policy. If you employ five or more people, the policy must be written down.

How can Orbit Health and Safety assist?

We develop health and safety policies around the way your organisation actually operates. A policy will normally include the three core sections: Statement of Intent, Organisation and Arrangements.

How often does this document need to be reviewed?

A health and safety policy should be reviewed when there are significant changes or when there is reason to think it may no longer reflect the organisation. Many businesses also choose to review it annually as part of their normal management arrangements.

How much does it cost?

Prices start from £25 per month depending on the size and nature of your business.

What is a fire risk assessment?

A fire risk assessment examines fire hazards, the people who may be at risk and the adequacy of the fire precautions already in place. It identifies whether further measures are needed to reduce risk.

Why do I need this service?

Where the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 applies, the Responsible Person must ensure a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment is carried out, recorded and kept under review.

What do I get with this service?

An experienced fire risk assessor will visit the premises, review relevant fire safety information and discuss the arrangements in place with the appropriate people. Following the assessment, you will receive a clear report with a prioritised action plan setting out any improvements required or recommended.

Our fire risk assessments use a structured, risk-based methodology and appropriate current guidance for the type of premises being assessed.

What is a Health and Safety Management Audit?

A health and safety management audit is a structured review of how your organisation manages health and safety. It looks at policies, procedures, records and working arrangements to identify strengths, gaps and priorities for improvement.

Why do I need an audit?

A management audit can help you:
• Check whether your arrangements meet legal and organisational requirements
• Identify strengths as well as gaps
• Prioritise practical improvements
• Provide independent evidence for insurers, accreditations, boards or clients
• Track progress over time

How can Orbit Health and Safety help?

Orbit have qualified auditors that offer flexible and tailored health and safety management audits to support your business. We will ensure that all relevant areas of health and safety are reviewed, and will provide you with the advice and guidance you need to action any issues identified during audit.

Do I need to report accidents and incidents?

Organisations should have a proportionate process for recording and reviewing accidents, incidents and near misses so that lessons can be learned and appropriate action taken.

Some specific accidents and incidents are also required to be reported to relevant enforcement authorities, which is stipulated under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) 2013. In the event of an accident or incident, we can provide support and guidance to help meet your legal obligations.

How can we assist you?

Orbit can support you with the reporting and investigation process, help establish what happened and why, and identify practical actions to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

What is a Gap Analysis?

A health and safety gap analysis reviews your current arrangements against the standards and legal requirements relevant to your organisation. It identifies what is already in place, where gaps remain and what should be prioritised.

Is a Gap Analysis the same as an audit

The two can overlap, but a gap analysis is usually a focused review of what is in place and what is missing, while a full audit generally examines the effectiveness of the management system in greater depth.

When do I need a Gap Analysis?

A gap analysis is often useful at the start of an engagement, after significant organisational change, or as a periodic check on progress. The right frequency depends on the size, complexity and risk profile of the organisation.

How can we assist you?

Orbit have competent and experienced consultants that will conduct a comprehensive safety gap analysis for your business. We will provide you with a detailed report and prioritised action plan that gives feedback on what you need to do to improve health and safety compliance.

How much does it cost?

Prices start from £450 depending on the size and nature of your business.

What is a Risk Assessment?

A risk assessment is a careful examination of work activities and hazards that could cause harm, followed by sensible decisions about eliminating hazards or controlling the risks that remain.

Does my company need Risk Assessments?

Yes, all employers have a legal obligation to protect people from harm and to ensure a duty of care. Regulation 3 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires that all employers assess the risks to the health and safety of their employees and anyone affected by their undertaking.

How often should you review Risk Assessments?

Risk assessments should be reviewed when there is reason to believe they may no longer be valid, or following significant changes to work activities, equipment, premises or personnel, or after relevant incidents.

How can we assist you?

Orbit Health and Safety have the skillset and competence to carry out risk assessments in a vast range of industries and work environments. We take away the burden of writing risk assessments by completing them on your behalf, ensuring that they are suitable and sufficient, and easy to follow. • Fire
• Work Equipment and Machinery
• Task Specific

• COSHH

As part of the risk assessment we will produce an easy to follow action plan that can be worked through by you and your team. In addition to this, we can also provide ongoing support and advice on helping you implement the actions from the assessments.

How much does it cost?

Prices can vary depending on the type and complexity of the assessment to be undertaken. Get in touch for more information.

What is a Health and Safety Inspection?

A health and safety inspection is a planned review of the workplace and work activities to identify hazards, check whether controls are working and highlight any action needed before problems lead to an incident.

How often do I need to complete a Health and Safety Inspection?

A health and safety inspection is an important part of proactively monitoring health and safety. The frequency of a health and safety inspection will vary depending on the nature of the site, the risks and the activities being carried out. A risk assessment will help identify the frequency of inspections.

How can we assist you?

We can complete a range of Health and Safety Inspections that are tailored to cover the work activities of your organisation. This can include general safety inspections that look at all aspects of your work activities, or safety sampling inspections that focus on particular activities or processes. A qualified and experienced consultant will inspect your site, identifying hazards and recommending actions in a prioritised order for you to work through.

How much does it cost?

Prices start from £250 depending on the size and nature of your business.
